Today I took a virtual tour of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Available through the museum's website, the tour allows visitors to explore the exhibits from anywhere with a fantastic 360 view. I chose to explore the permanent exhibits, but visitors can also choose from current or past temporary exhibits and even take narrated tours. guests can explore the museum by clicking on arrows to navigate and clicking on markers on the exhibits to get a close look. I loved exploring the Hall of Fossils and learning about the extinction event that ended the Cretaceous period.
I love the potential this virtual field trip has for classroom use. Field trips can be hard to make happen and depending on the location of your school it might not be possible to take a trip to the Smithsonian. With the virtual tour, students can visit the museum during class. This could have a real application in a science classroom with just a little class instruction. in a chemistry classroom for example, students could learn about real applications by exploring the museum and completing an assignment on the different ways they learned about chemistry being used to learn about the Earth's history.
I have thankfully had the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, however there are many people who do not have the ability to visit in person. It is incredible how their website provides a clear, virtual tour of the museum and an easy way to navigate through it all. I also agree that field trips can be hard to provide for many schools, so with this opportunity the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History provides, teachers can still bring this experience to their students by taking the virtual tour in their classrooms!
ReplyDeleteYour reflection on the Smithsonian virtual tour is insightful, especially in highlighting its educational potential. I love how you connect the experience to classroom use, making science more accessible to students. teachers could integrate the tour into lesson plans, maybe with discussion questions or interactive assignments to guide students through the experience! I definitely wish I went to the Smithsonian National Museum but I think it is so amazing how the website has a tour for children who might not have the opportunity to like me!
