Changemakers – Elevating Equity and Student Voice
When looking through the WE Schools platform, I found the Teachers Diversity and Inclusion module, and it interests me right away because of its importance in the classroom. As a future teacher, this platform and the recourse I chose helps me approach the classroom setting with more knowledge and awareness to be a better teacher.
Why this recourse mattered:
Diversity is not a topic but a reality in all classrooms today. This resource goes beyond common ideas and gives teachers strategies to create spaces where every student feels seen, heard, and supported. It covers how to:
- Building inclusive learning environments
- Incorporating culturally diverse perspectives
- Being friendly/supportive to students with different backgrounds
Takeaways as a future teacher:
This resource allowed me to remind myself that inclusion is proactive and requires effort from myself in the classroom. Being able to allow students to prepare to collaborate across differences and build empathy is a type of classroom environment I would want to lead. In my future classroom, I’ll use these tools I learned to promote collaboration and respect for all classroom discussions, select wide range of materials that reflect different cultures or identities, and engage all students about equity and belonging.
