Nearpod: Global Collaboration opportunities

Nearpod is a digital lesson library. There are countless lessons and available activities on this site. You may ask yourself, why does that matter even in the slightest? Well.. By having such a large selection of resources, Nearpod has boundless opportunities via countless means. Many of those opportunities can contribute to global collaboration, as there are lessons from across the world available on Nearpod by which classrooms can gain a global consciousness. There are also many lessons with VR or AR capabilities where students can utilize modern technologies. 

As a global tool, Nearpod is used all over the world. Because of this, the opportunities are vast for, say, classrooms in America to be granted exposure to classrooms all over the world. Not just the students, but educators as well can benefit from the global presence that Nearpod has access to. Educators in 160+ countries use Nearpod. For educators, exposure to educators from all over the globe can lead to inspiration and the ability to craft new lessons for their classrooms!

Returning to the ideas of global collaboration...
Through Nearpod, classrooms in non-affected areas can learn about issues in affected areas. That probably sounds vague and makes no sense, so here is an example: The conflict in Kashmir is not happening in the United States, and thus, may go relatively unknown to students. Nearpod has lessons on this conflict however, and from this, students can gain an understanding of global events. Through their understanding, students, working on goals projects or any project in general, can address the issues, working alongside their peers and potentially governments to try and make a powerful statement on topics all over the world. 
Students can work together, with their classmates on projects, but that isn't all that much GLOBAL collaboration is it? Nearpod has collaboration activities, where students can collaborate, similar to a padlet or a jamboard. This next part is solely on the educators to make possible. Collaboration is possible across borders, continents, and oceans. The only prerequisite is that educators from across the world will have to connect first. Should they connect, they can bring their classrooms together and have their students work alongside each other, despite any distance between them! Through this collaboration, issues such as the Kashmir conflict can be discussed by students of many nations(if their teachers connect first that is!). Should there be a connection between classrooms, those global goals projects I mentioned earlier can be worked on by students who simultaneously on opposite sides of the planet! Those projects would be so interesting, as the collaboration between different nations students could yield great results.

     Nearpod VR is a game-changer for global learning. It allows students to explore the world without leaving their classroom. From touring the Great Wall of China to diving into the coral reefs of Australia, Nearpod brings immersive 360° experiences directly to students—and that makes it perfect for global collaborations in K–12 education.

    Here’s how Nearpod VR enhances global learning and collaboration:

Virtual and Augmented Reality

In today’s interconnected world, preparing students to engage globally is more important than ever. One innovative way educators are making this possible is through the use of Nearpod VR, a virtual reality tool that allows students to experience immersive field trips without leaving the classroom. This technology provides more than just virtual sightseeing; it creates opportunities for global collaboration among K–12 students. For example, students in different parts of the world can explore the same historical site or natural wonder simultaneously and then participate in virtual discussions or joint projects based on what they’ve learned. A class in the United States could take a Nearpod VR tour of the Great Wall of China, and then connect via video conferencing with students in China to compare cultural perspectives, share reflections, and ask questions. These shared experiences foster empathy, cultural awareness, and teamwork skills that are essential in our global society. Nearpod VR also aligns well with the work of educators like Jamie Donally, a leader in integrating AR and VR tools into education. Donally emphasizes how immersive technology can bridge geographic and cultural divides, making global learning more personal and impactful. Nearpod is an learning platform that allows educators to deliver engaging interactive lessons using assessments, multimedia content, and collaborative tools. Its virtual reality feature lets students take 360 degree virtual field trips to global landmarks, cultural heritage sites, and natural wonders of the world, all from the comfort of the classroom.

One of the benefits of Nearpod is that unlike other virtual reality tools it is not necessary to use expensive equipment. Nearpod is compatible with inexpensive viewers like Google Cardboard and can also be used on regular tablets and Chromebooks which makes it highly accessible for classrooms around the world regardless of budget constraints.

Supporting Global Collaboration

Nearpod goes beyond just sightseeing, it lays down the groundwork for meaningful cross cultural communication and project based collaboration. Students on opposite sides of the world can take a virtual tour of the same historic place together. After exploring, they can collaborate and ask questions that would be unique to their culture which can help build a greater global understanding. Students can also visit important environmental places that are in danger like the Amazon Rainforest or the melting glaciers in the arctic, then partner with peers in other countries to brainstorm climate action plans. This fosters empathy, critical thinking, and problem solving in the real world. Nearpod can also enable students to explore everyday life in other countries, visiting towns, homes, and schools in different regions. These experiences can become conversation starters in global writing programs or cultural exchanges.

Educators can incorporate Nearpod into their classrooms through lesson plans such as this one. In this lesson students can explore the grand canyon and learn about it through a virtual tour and in an interactive environment. After the virtual tour students can make a poster sharing what they learned from the experience.

Nearpod can be used in many creative ways to help build a deeper understanding of global connections and can create a dialogue between different cultures through its use in the classroom.

Technology is expanding and transforming education every day, and two tools leading the charge are Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. These amazing technologies bring education to life by allowing students to interact with content in a way that is hands-on, engaging, and highly visible.

-       Virtual Reality: transports students into different virtual environments without even having to leave the classroom.

-        Augmented Reality: gives digital content onto the real world just through a simple screen.

 

Why use this tool in the classroom? Virtual Reality makes learning fun and active instead of boring and passive. It emphasizes on student engagement, support diverse learning styles, and brings content to life. The biggest reason to use this tool is how VR can spark global collaboration. When students from all over the world explore the same virtual reality content and share ideas, student begin to see the world and each other much differently.

An example from this site is the virtual field trip to “the Great Barrier Reef.” Students get to explore something from Australia without leaving the classroom. They learn all about the coral reef ecosystems and biodiversity through 360-degree visuals. Teachers can pair this fun activity with collaborative assignments through google slides and more to push the learning process.

 

The idea of children being in New Jersey and students in Australia working together to create conversations on one of the biggest marine life areas is quite amazing.

Breaking Borders: Using Nearpod VR to Foster Global Collaboration in K–12 Classrooms

Introduction

In today's interconnected world, fostering global awareness and collaboration among students is more crucial than ever. Virtual reality (VR) tools like Nearpod offer innovative ways to bring diverse cultures and perspectives into the classroom, enabling students to engage with peers worldwide in meaningful ways.

Nearpod VR: A Gateway to Global Learning

Nearpod's VR feature provides immersive experiences that transport students to various parts of the world without leaving their classrooms. With over 300,000 virtual reality experiences available, educators can select from a vast library of standards-aligned VR lessons across different subjects .

For instance, students can virtually visit the Eiffel Tower to explore geometric shapes in architecture or journey through the Galapagos Islands to study evolution . These experiences not only enhance understanding of academic concepts but also expose students to different cultures and environments.

Enhancing Global Collaboration

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) have transformed modern education by making learning more interactive, immersive, and engaging. For example, instead of looking at pictures of ancient ruins, students can take virtual field trips and explore them in 3D, gaining a deeper appreciation for history and culture. This hands-on experience helps to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

WE virtual learning center

 The WE Virtual Learning Center is a free, online resource hub designed to support educators and students in fostering service-learning, well-being, and trauma-informed practices. Developed by WE Schools, it offers a wide array of tools including lesson plans, professional development modules, and student activities focused on building empathy, resilience, and global citizenship. Educators can access themed workshops, on-demand video libraries, and resources aligned with social and emotional learning to create inclusive and engaging classrooms. The platform also provides opportunities for students to explore local and global issues, encouraging them to take meaningful action in their communities. Registration is free and open to all educators seeking to enhance their teaching practices and empower their students 


The "WE Teachers" section within the WE Virtual Learning Center offers a comprehensive suite of free resources designed to empower educators in creating inclusive, and socially conscious classrooms. This hub provides professional development modules, lesson plans, and activities that emphasize social and emotional learning, resilience, and global citizenship. Educators can access tools to build capacity in areas like trauma-informed practices and connect with a community of like-minded professionals. I will definitely be using these tools when I am an educator 

Exploring WE Virtual Learning Center

     Today I Looked into the WE learning center, and I can say that the most interesting one I found was, Restorative Justice Module. 


In short definition the Restorative module, is to stray away from traditional school things. I, someone of the most new generations believe that the older ways of teaching Dose not work. The more years pass, the more the way of teaching should as well. 


    One of te many things Ive started seeing in high school before I left was self care days. Schools, educators, and staff as now realizing that school is not only stressful for teachers but students as well. i've had teachers that had dedicated on day out of the week to let the class relax and do whatever. Some kids use that class period to catch up on other work, some students slept during that time, and others just talked. This gives the students a bigger break. I don't count lunch as one because most lunches on go to 20-30 minutes and then they are back to class. 


    Another example is having children who miss homework, or misbehave sit out of breaks. I've seen kids who have doe these things and then are force to sit alone while other children play for their break. Having kids isolated during these brakes hurt them socially. This is their only real time to socialize outside of class and you as a teacher shouldn't take that Childs time. If a child is missing homework, you as a teacher should talk with you student and come to a conclusion. If your student is misbehaving, pul them aside and figure out why and how to stop. 


    Getting rid of toxic educational traditions is so important. The better way for a student to like school, is for them to have a good relationship with their classmates, school, and educator.

 Exploring WE Virtual Learning Center

Today, I made an account with WE Virtual Learning Center, and took some time to explore it. I found a bunch of helpful resources and modules for teachers, or future teachers like myself, to utilize. I chose a tool that stood out to me, which was called, Say It Now. The resource was all about expressing gratitude. I think that allowing your students time to express gratitude in different ways can be great for their mental health and dealing with the stressors of life. I have always been a big believer in affirmations in the classroom, whether that be an "Affirmation station" or daily morning affirmations, like, "I am strong" and "I am kind". I think that these types of things matter when teaching young minds. 


The screenshot above is an example of what the resource is about. It would be great to do independently as a teacher or with your students! It offers a variety of options to express your gratitude, whether that be by identifying a person you are grateful for, writing about gratitude, or even just discovering what gratitude means to you. 


This would be an excellent activity for children to do. I think that expressing gratitude is a great way to slow down, boost serotonin, and remember the little things in life there are to be grateful for. This is a great resource for teachers to use with their students.
    Overall, this website has offered me a lot of interesting tools that I can definitely use in my future classroom.


Changemakers - Say It Now

    Being a future educator I am open to all tips and tricks. This course alone has given me so many outlets and options that I am inclined to use in my class as a new teacher. Navigating around WE Virtual Learning Center  has made me excited for future use.

  I located the Virtual Learning Center on the website which provides so many cool courses and organizational tools for teacher use. They provide calendars to help plan our days and lesson plans as well as courses to help teachers navigate student engagement and empowerment.

  They also provide downloadable resources for teachers as walk through, step-by-step instructional lessons. I like the We Have Gratitude lesson and could definitely see my self using this in my class. This downloadable resource provides the purpose and objective of the lesson. It provides the skills that will be used, the time that will be consumed and the materials that are needed.

    Not only do these lesson plans lay things out for us, they are fun and interactive. Even the modules are colorful and intriguing. Here is a screenshot of part of an activity given in the We Have Gratitude downloadable content, which walks the teacher and the students through the lesson plans. 

    WE Virtual Learning Center seems like such a good tool to use in the classroom especially for new coming teachers who really don't know how to run things yet. I will for sure be using programs like this and others to help direct my classes! 

A look into WE Virtual Learning Center

As a future kindergarten teacher, I'm always looking for ways to create a classroom that’s not only fun and engaging but also meaningful for my students' social and emotional growth. During a recent exploration of the WE Virtual Learning Center, I discovered just how many powerful tools are out there for educators like me who care deeply about student well-being. One of the most impactful resources I found was the “Say it Now: Why Gratitude is a Key Ingredient for Well-being”course under the WE Teachers section. It highlighted how gratitude isn’t just a feeling, it's a skill that can be nurtured and modeled in the classroom. I loved that the course gave real-life strategies for helping students understand and express gratitude in simple, age-appropriate ways. For kindergarteners, this might look like a daily gratitude circle, journaling with drawings, or even role-playing thank-you scenarios during center time. The course included reflection questions, interactive videos, and supportive content that really helped me think about how I can personally embody gratitude as an educator. I realized that before I can teach my students to be thankful and kind, I have to practice those same habits myself both online and offline. What makes the WE Virtual Learning Center so special is how it blends SEL, global awareness, and hands-on learning in ways that are truly kid-friendly. I’m excited to explore more of their resources, especially the DIY Action Campaigns and lesson plans that encourage student voice, even at a young age. I can already imagine my future students feeling empowered to care about themselves, their classmates, and the world around them.

WE Virtual Learning Classroom - The power of gratitude

WE Virtual Learning Center is a website that offers resources and programs to support teachers and empower young students to become their strongest selves. There are modules, courses, campaigns, lesson packages and supporting resources, as well as virtual workshops, and a video library. This website's goal is to help teachers stay organized and to lift up their students, while also focusing on students well-being and goals. 

As I was exploring the WE Virtual Learning Center, I came across the WE Teachers Courses which provides a multitude of resources for teachers depending on their focus. For example, there are two resources and courses on the science of power and gratitude, promoting that gratitude is a key ingredient for mental health and well-being. The website shares how teachers can implement gratitude into their personal lives, to be able to implement it into their classrooms. If this is a resource a teacher is interested in, there is a 31 page document to dive deeper into why gratitude is important, how it enhances verbal and written expression, along with a variety of ways to incorporate it in your life and classroom.

Each resource is also provided with a course that shares videos, questions, and quizzes to help you really understand the meaning and course content. I decided to take the course on Say it Now: Why Gratitude is a Key Ingredient for Well-being and Promoting SEL and was introduced to the Say it Now workshop video. After watching the video, they provide seven questions reflecting back on what was discussed.If a question is answered incorrectly, they provide learners the opportunity to try again. Once the question is answered correctly, the course explains why it is correct. After completing the course, you can continue to read the resource page and begin to implement this in your life and classroom!

 I recently explored the WE Virtual Learning Center and the resources it can provide for my future classroom. This site is a great resource and provides lots of tools for educators and students to get involved in their communities and affect change. In an ever growing interconnected world, it is increasingly important for students to learn about and understand the global community they are apart of, and this site is a great way to incorporate this in your classroom. There are Service Learning Toolkit which include a range of topics that students can get involved in to advocate for change.


My favorite tool I found was the D.I.Y. Campaign found under the Action Campaigns tab. Unlike the other action campaigns on the website, this one is not specific to one cause. It provides an outline and ideas for how students/classrooms can get involved and advocate for a cause they choose. I especially like this one because it can so easily be tailored to students interests. Instead of choosing from a list of predetermined topics, students can come up with their own ideas of what they want to work towards. Then students can work on their own or in small groups towards their goal, or the whole class can vote on the topics they came up with and work towards the winner as a class.

WE Virtual Learning Center: The Future Of My Classroom

     All throughout the semester, it has been a great learning opportunity to understand and engage with online web tools. As we come to a close for this semester, I explore one last reflection, and ultimately provide my audience with tools I will be using in my future classroom. 

    WE Virtual Learning Center, is a website dedicated to providing resources for not only students, but educators as well. Throughout my discovery of this website, I found something called We Virtual
Workshops
. On this tab of the website, it provides videos which are labeled as workshops. These videos go in depth about lessons, and even connect students to others around the world, with something called Global Classrooms

When explaining major subjects, these videos/virtual workshops will come in handy within the classroom. They are fun, interactive, and engaging all at once, which will be perfect to incorporate into lessons.     Overall, I love this website, and I will be exploring it further and using other tools provided as well.

     In the WE Virtual Learning Center, I explored under the tab "We Teaching Courses" and looked at "Bringing Gratitude to Life Within Your Classroom and School Community". I picked this tab because not only do I believe that school is used to give kids an education from a knowledge standpoint, I believe it's also important to teach children about life. Teaching children to be grateful and and express gratitude teaches them how to be kinder people. It's important for all educators to know that they're not just raising students, they're raising people.  

    Gratitude can be taught in a classroom in many different ways. Some ways involve a trivia game where students are asked a multitude of questions about gratitude and how expressing gratitude makes them feel. Another example is to be mindful and have the students reflect upon their week and express what they're grateful for throughout their week. This keeps students grounded, having them express that life is a gift and simply being able to have an education is something to be grateful for. One final example is sharing our feelings on gratitude and what we're grateful for to others. This keeps student connected with their feelings but also creates active listening to their classmates and a way for students to build connections with one another. 

    



Harbringers of positive, communal change


Following the conclusion of this semester, the Spring 2025 semester, I will officially be closer to entering the classroom as an educator than I was leaving the classroom the last time as a student(K-12). With that in mind, it is important to begin formulating how exactly one will go about leading their classroom! Those formulations should be things that future educators are excited about, things that will immediately bring value to the classroom. 

I did some digging around the WE.org site, and eventually came across the service-learning student toolkit. This toolkit revolves around, well, service learning! As I read through this toolkit, I saw that the examples of success stories working with a service-learning oriented approach were younger students. I will be a high school teacher, so ages 15-18. My thinking process leads me to believe that service learning is better suited for that age group. These students are entering either college or the workforce, part-time or full time, and the skills that can be gained from this learning style can greatly aid in the endeavors, both future or current, for high school students. Skills like those listed below are very important to have whether or not a student goes to college or the workforce. 
Should I be able to find ways to engage my students into a service-learning environment, I can set them up to cultivate vital traits that will greatly benefit their futures. As an educator, I see it as my role to inspire and provide as much support to my students. That would include examples like this, providing opportunities for my students to grow. 
Potentially incorporating a toolkit like this also excites me, as high school age students have one thing at their disposal that other level students don't... cars! If working through these lessons inspires them, they can go out on their own and continue doing good in the world. That is exciting to me because that is what I aim to do as a teacher: I aim to inspire and promote good, and through lessons like this, that is very much possible. 
Through lesson guiding, or through individual efforts, my students can go out into the world and bring about a positive impact. Just the idea of that is exciting, and the potential lesson planning like the service-learning student toolkit brings is enough for it to be incredibly valuable to any classroom. If incorporated properly, students can become harbingers of positivity, and that would make me, as an educator, so incredibly proud of them and what we have been able to do!

The WE Schools Service Learning toolkit is a guided roadmap that assists in examining social issues, creating action plans, and implementing effective projects within the community. With a service learning emphasis, it aligns classroom education with practical application, providing real world experiences that coincide with classroom learning. Students are encouraged to ask hard questions, set targets, and work collaboratively.

Standout Features

Perhaps most striking, is how student friendly it is. The language is simple and compelling, there are interesting pictures, and the design allows for it to be easily followed by students as they make their way through the process from concept to impact. It is full of actual stories of success that make it still feel like something within reach.

The toolkit reflects a range of flexible campaign choices, including initiatives around sustainability, equity, and wellness, or the D.I.Y. campaign resource. The adaptable nature allows learners to link what they learn to those issues that are most meaningful to them. Moreover, the toolkit focuses strongly on reflection at all steps, with opportunities for students to record progress, to critically reflect upon experience, and to acknowledge and enjoy both academic and personal growth.

How I Plan to Use This Resource

In my future classroom, this toolkit will be great for project based learning. I will encourage my students to become active citizens through activities like a food drive at school, an awareness campaign on social media, or an environmental project for the community. We will use the worksheets to facilitate discussion, make decisions, and analyze results.

Changemakers

 Changemakers: Service learning.

What is service learning?

Service learning is more than volunteering or doing community service. It allows students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to real world scenarios to help your community and people around you solve problems. This can help students with their social skills when interacting with other people, increase academic engagement and, university and college readiness.

Service Learning Steps

Service learning has a framework of 4 steps to help students meet academic learning objectives while learning about local, national and global issues and having a positive impact.

Step 1 is Investigate and Learn. Students will investigate any issue or challenge that is being faced by people in their community. For example garbage or waste on local parks, teaching people about the importance of recycling, etc.

Step 2 is Action Plan. Develop a plan to take action on this matter. For example, bringing awareness about waste and trash in local parks can have a positive impact on them. 

Step 3 is Take Action. Based on your plan, take action and do something to better the situation. Volunteering to clean public places, or placing signs about recycling near recycling cans can encourage more people to dispose their trash in the right place.

Step 4 is Report and Celebrate. Any action you take, as small as it might have been, will have a bigger impact in your community than you think. Keep track of everything you do.

Finally Record and Reflect. Keep an activity log and complete written reflections throughout your campaign.
