Chapter 5 - Planning for The Unexpected 

 

     In the PDF I read from Kristin Harrington’s Adventures in Authentic Learning (2020), I dove into detail about chapter 5, “Planning for the Unexpected.” In this Chapter, she emphasizes how teachers or educators should focus on the process of learning rather than detailed lesson plans. This allows students to have deeper critical thinking, creative problem-solving, and more connections with students and teachers.

    Harrington believes that instead of resisting interruptions, teachers should integrate them into the lessons. She says, “Teachable moments allow students to practice the Empowered Learner standard, which states that “students understand the fundamental concepts of technology operations, demonstrate the ability to choose, use and troubleshoot current technologies and can transfer their knowledge to explore emerging technologies” (Harrington pg. 156). The opportunity to have student-driven learning, where questions and curiosity lead to deeper engagement is so important for learners.A child writing on a chalkboard

    Project-based learning should be an addition for all educators because it is a great way to implement flexibility when needed. A science teacher, for example, can allow students to explore in detail the human body through hands-on objects and pictures rather than sticking to the known packets.

    After reading this chapter, Harrington's information reminded me that being flexible and ready for anything is not a bad thing but shows creativity and resilience.
